Expectations and Permission

I want to sing like the birds sing, not worrying about who hears or what they think.
— Rumi

Hard to believe but this is my first post of October. The days just really go by fast. I get caught up in day to day activities. I loose track of days and weeks.

Fall is always a busy time. Wrapping up the yard and garden. Preserving some of the food over for winter. Making sure things are protected from the coming freezing temps and wet weather.

Our oldest daughter, middle child, Olivia turned 20. Someday I will tell you her story. We thank everyday that she is with us. She had a very rough start and we were not sure she would come home with us after her birth. She was born with a heart defect and has bravely endured many other health issues. We still regularly see specialists for her. She is autistic and for now the plan is we will take care of her in our family home. So hard to believe my kids are growing way too fast. I think why she came to mind is related to the title of this post.

Raising a child with disabilities is full of different expectations, with a lot of permissions to yourself that you have to do things differently in order for your family to work and be happy. Almost everyday these two things can change.

Expectations and permission to doing things against mainstream has been a struggle for me. Maybe because I have had to change my expectations so often and I tend to be a little hard on myself. Too high of expectations or society set expectations , affect all of us. Permission to not do things the expected way, the main stream way, or to change what we expect of ourselves. All things we find hard.

My health has been going through major changes for almost four years now.. I have had to let go of a lot of expectations for myself and give myself new permissions. How I blog and this website is new to me. I have certain expectations for it and for me. When I don’t meet them exactly like I want, I have to say that is ok, tomorrow is a new day. Start again. So I am.

Today I gave myself a new permission. Also ran it by hubby and he is supportive. Funny how we have such high expectations for ourselves that we think everyone else is thinking the same but they are not. Their expectations are usually kinder than our own. So I am allowing my self to take care of my website and blog from the comfort and safe place of my bed. There is much I can’t do from my bed but also much that I can do on my laptop. I had the expectation of; I had to casual business dress and sit at one of my desks or in the studio. I just realized that the beauty of working from home and being your own boss is I can do what I want. if working from bed is productive then “permission granted”!

So here I am blogging and putting paintings for sale and marketing from my bed tonight and it feels great. I am actually doing it instead of putting it off again because all the expectations haven’t been met. How about we give each other permission to do what works best for each one of us? Be supportive of each other. Be reasonable with our expectations of ourselves and others. This works best for me in my present circumstances. I hope you give yourself permission to do what works best for you and set reasonable expectations tailored to your circumstances.

Good night,
Deana Mattos

So, one more time:

On the Flip Side of…..Cleaning Out…

September 29, 2020

I told you I could write about this everyday. I hope you like transitional rides, with lots of twists and turns, highs and lows, of refocusing your life. If so you are in the right place. I follow different blogs, programs and different things to do with organizing. I don’t follow it to a tee but I like the inspiration and ideas.

This morning I woke up and checked my email which was at zero last night when I went to bed. Follow up on that….I now have ten unread. I am going through them as they come in for the most part. I unsubscribed to five of them. As I get stronger I will to more of them. I also deleted ones I didn’t need to look at this time., Now that it is clean and less overwhelming. Before bed I will bring it down to zero again wether it is deleting, reading and then deleting, or filing. This is how I have to clean in my home, One little section at a time.

As I am cleaning I have to decide what collections mean the most to me right now. Which ones go with my current lifestyle and which ones I can live without. This is not an easy process because I love pretty unique things. I am particularly drawn to vintage and antique oddities.

I was collecting a lot of vases, mostly vintage USA McCoy and McCoy style pottery in all colors. I have been now streamlining this collection and only keeping certain colors. More about this later. One hint though, one of the colors are pink for one of the bathroom makeovers. I have also collected milk glass for a number of years, like when it was super cheap and everyone wanted to get rid of it. I use the majority of it in my studio. I like the clean white as containers for my paint brushes, scissors, pens and pencils. This summer I painted a dark blue wall in my living room. It is the perfect backdrop for it. This is the reason I had to downsize my McCoy.

So now you know. Sometimes my clean outs are for reasons to make room for other stuff I want more. For now that works for me and I call it win. This summer I have scored some nice additions to my milk glass. I shop garage sales, flea markets, antique stores and thrift stores. The above photos is some new pieces.

I could probably post on this subject everyday. I call myself a collector of sorts. My house is full of beautiful things. Some may call me a hoarder, yes my husband, but I am not. Really, I am not. So let’s go back to saying a collector of sorts, with procrastinator tendencies, save because I might need it and a large bit of sentimentality. Sometimes I call myself a very young looking survivor of the Great Depression. I had a great grandfather who I cherish who was a survivor of the Great Depression and an original Homesteader in Montana. He had so many treasures in his little dark work shed. I like to think it is his fault I collect.

Back to the subject of Cleaning Out! The tendency to keep stuff around flows into most aspects of my life. But I am in the process, which is long and hard, of working through my items clearing out both physical and mental clutter. Many things have brought me to this moment, I sure I will elaborate as time goes on. One reason though is this website. A refocusing of my time and attention. I always have a lot on my plate so to bring one thing in something else has to go out.

Today was a mental clean out. I had over 30,000 emails. most never opened. I knew this had to be done forever but totally procrastinated. It seems as of late I have to take things in small pieces to not fill with anxiety and get overwhelmed which then cripples me. I am finally learning things about myself. So today I deleted all of them. I figured 99 percent were probably useless and the 1 percent that may have not have been useless I will never know. So they are gone. A big fat 0. I had to do it this way because I could not validate any more time wasted on it The goal going forward is to read and delete, file important ones and unsubscribe to many.

Deep breath. Release. Another chunk of mental clutter gone.

Happy Sunday…

I hope this finds you safe. We have had some cool days and rain. The smoke cleared to safer levels in our valley along with blue skies. I am so grateful for this, even though I fear it won’t last for long. The smoke still has a fog over the not so distant mountains. The high was 68 degrees here is Western Montana. This is weather perfection to me until about 75. In the photos you can still see the yellow blooms of sunflowers and in the background you can see the yellow leaves on our tree. He is always the first to go at the end of Summer.

I walked around the yard and considered my fall plantings and ate some ripened tomatoes (bare foot, of course). Soon I will be tidying up the garden for another spring.

I brought my office outside to enjoy some time in the fleeting moments of the summer. I hope you were able to take a break from worry this Sunday and enjoy some blessing that the day gave you.

September, 18, 2020

Hello, Funny thing happened. Not haha funny, annoying funny. So I am getting used to the new website and blogging format. This particular post was accidentally posted over and most recently accidentally not saved, that is what I am guessing. So now it is going to be quite short. I need a win and just see if I can actually make it through this time.

Smile…. Summer Peonies….Part Deux

When things are not going as planned we may need to give ourselves a reason to smile.  I am a believer in looking at the positive and counting my blessings.  Sometimes I may need a reminder though.

So I try to surround myself with reasons to smile.  “Spark Joy” so to speak.  I do this both in my house and yard.   My house is full of art, plants, color and vintage. Outside I do the same. I have a pair of vintage flamingos which I love. Someday I hope to have a flock.

What things make you Smile?

Steady as She Goes…..

Hand Crocheted Beaded Cuff Bracelet Deana Mattos – Bella Cosa Art

My website was started this Spring with the help of an art mentor Laurie Pace of Laurie Pace Art Studio. A fabulous artist and website designer along with being a really cool and patient person. She is now teaching me to sail on my own.

It calls to mind the nautical phrase, “Steady as She Goes!” which is a cry to the helmsman to keep on the current course. Laurie helped me get on the course I was looking for and is now giving me the tools to sail onward.

There is still much learning and practice, the wind is at a stiff breeze but as time goes by I hope to be a gale wind sweeping through. It has been fun and frustrating but it seems it is starting to level off and slowly be going forward. I hope you will be patient as I begin again at blogging life and fill my website with lovelies for you to enjoy.

Please follow, like, sign up for emails, check back, share and all that so we can sail the seas together. I would appreciate it. Deana Mattos

The Air Weighs Heavy

September 17, 2020

Some days the air weighs heavy. Today it is literally Heavy with smoke, as so many are dealing with. Heavy with some health concerns. Heavy with some financial concerns. Heavy with the suffering and injustice of the world.

Some days we may need to pray on it and let it go. That may be all we can do. As I do that and push through this morning to get some things done, I start to feel a little momentum.

This website and blogging are important to me for various reasons. It will take some discipline to be regular, especially for me because I am not a very scheduled person. I want to make a list of must dos for each day. To set some kind of routine I put other things around. I making that a winter goal. With summer coming to an end some outside things come off the list and I will have a little more time.

I know I am new to all this and a little sporadic still but I am hoping you like what you see enough to stick it out with me through this beginning stage.

Meeting Fellow Gardeners

As I ventured out into the garden this Spring I have found I have some excess trees and vines. In the last few years I have started to sell them to make a little spending money to spend on improvements to my yard. It is fun to share plants, most leave here with extras. Also a perk, meeting new people and fellow gardeners.

Recently I met a pleasant older woman who came to pick up plants. I usually dig when they show. This lady was very sweet and asked about the apricot trees and vines as I was digging. While we were shooting the breeze she told me she had lots of raspberries if I needed more, also strawberries. Three varieties so you always have fruit.

I definitely needed strawberries and mentioned I would soon be paying her for plants. She said no she had so many that she doesn’t need. So I tried to give her money back and she insisted.

We then took a tour around the yard and talked plants. I gave her a start of everything she showed interest in and told her there was more to come when I visit her gardens. She also has a ton of red bee balm. Score! I only have a pink one. I love feeding the bees and birds.

She also gave me a Pro Garden Tip: Plant cilantro seeds in with your strawberries each Spring. Bugs don’t like them and stay away from munching your berries.

Garden Therapy

Spring has Sprung here in Western Montana. Summer will soon be upon us but maybe in name only. Our weather has been unique in the past years. Unusually wet and cold last year. It is a glorious albeit busy time of year, it helps that it is one of favorites. The only stress is it is time sensitive. I am trying to ignore that element and take things one day at a time and remember it can always happen next year.

This Spring I inherited a bunch of plants from a neighbor who is residing her house and putting decks in. She had so many of green babies that needed a new home. I was one of the happy recipients. It took hours of digging. I put them in buckets with a fair amount of dirt in the shade and watered them a lot.

They all stayed happy until I was ready to plant. It took weeks to do this as all my beds needed to be cleaned from three years of neglect while I didn’t have the energy to take care of things. I also dug new beds too as I created little vignettes to enjoy around the yard and a new flower bed for me to enjoy around back where the vegetable garden is. With hard work my gardens have been redeemed. Nature always has a way of enduring and with a little nurturing is more than willing to give back. I am already seeing the hard work and muscle aches pay off. My mental status is happier and more content, my gardens are prettier than the have ever been. Lastly it has been great PT and more fun than my traditional PT. My balance and endurance have come up for sure.

A New Beginning

I want to sing like the birds sing, not worrying about who hears or what they think.
— Rumi

Welcome and Thank you for joining me again. It has been awhile. I am always creating but not always posting, blogging or sticking to the business side of art.

As you know things change, sometimes daily, weekly, monthly or yearly and sometimes it seems all at once. Family, health, age, circumstances, work. In the last three years much has changed in my life. The littles are growing and are 23, 19, and my baby is 15. Two of my children are now adults. My husband and I now have adult legal custody of our autistic daughter and entered a new phase. She will continue her life adventure living with us.

My husband is no longer working full time in banking and is moving in to working from home. That makes a full house! Winning hand in cards… let’s see what it does for Art.

My health changed also. My disc slipped while looking up (in a thrift store, of course) and caused extreme vertigo for days. I then got inflammation that caused Vestibular Neuritis, which in turn became Vestibular neuropathy, causing the balance nerve signals to die in my right ear.

As you can imagine, this has caused many changes in my daily life. These are among the few things that led me here today and inspired me to move forward. I have another art mentor (my mama of course is always number one) and friend who has helped me make my dream come true of having my own website.

So I am official now, “Going Pro”. I am doing this just as I turned 50 this last month and this year is our 30th wedding anniversary. This is a great way to start my second half of a century. Don’t you think?

Over the years I have learned a thing or two … maybe, so what I share I hope you will find interesting. Please follow on this new life journey. Life after Fifty! Feel free to comment on what might interest you or you want to know more about. I will be sharing many things from life in Montana to finding my heART as I step forward into my fifties.

So, one more time:
